I work as a Building Official for HRM, and one of the valuable aspects of our work is ensuring that barrier free standards are met during construction projects. Nothing helps a person to understand an issue or challenge like facing it yourself. Spending a day in a wheelchair is a very small price to pay if it helps increase awareness & accessibility in our city. My hope is that my colleagues and I will come out of this initiative with a greater awareness of the need to ensure barrier free standards are met, and the value we add to our city by our work.
